Bali Travel: House on a Rice Field, Ubud

I've always loved Ubud for its rice field view. That what makes Bali so special. Beaches, rice fields, mountains, Bali has them all.

There is this old advert that I used to see when I was watching my cartoon last time on telly. The advert shows that people watch telly from a house which is built in the middle of the rice field.

Okay, calling it a house is basically an overstatement as it was more like a Indonesian rendition of gazebo which is used by the farmers to take a break from farming on a lunch time. Their wives will bring food for them to eat and they will together with their family in the house.

The telly always makes me and my friends wonder actually. How on earth does the people manage to watch telly from a wooden house which has no electricity? Hahaha. #thepowerofadvert

Bali Travel: An Artistic Day at Bidadari Art Gallery, Ubud

Hello everyone! Do you know that other than its gold and silversmiths, Ubud is also famous for its wood sculpture arts? We did not really know about this fact until we stepped inside one of the many art galleries in Ubud, Bidadari Art Gallery.

Oh wow, looks at that mask. Now, this will make a good accessories for a masquerade banquet, isn't it? =P

Bidadari Art Gallery functions as exhibition hall, art store and a sculpture workshop. We can see these men sculpturing the wooden statues.

You will really need both delicacy and accuracy when you are sculpturing a statue which has a lot of details.

In another room, we can see a lot of wooden mask and even wooden painting. These art pieces do not come cheap though as it needs a lot of preparation and skill to create one.

Bali Travel: Celuk Village, where the Gold and silversmiths live

After coming out from Bebek Joni with an added weight, we thought the next thing that we need to enjoy in Ubud is limited to the beautiful rice terraces. I started to think we should just pull the car aside, make a stop then stare into the beautiful scenery for eternity...

...until our driver told us that we are going to visit Celuk Village, to see how the Balinese create gold and silver accessories. Hmm, that did not sound bad either so off we went. We went into a store which also functions as a workshop for the gold and silversmiths.

Inside the workshop, you can see how the store workers are making the accessories. For example, the lady here is currently making earrings.

You need certain degree of accuracy and patience when you are assembling the small pieces of silver beads into your earrings structure. Totally not my career choice. Hahaha.

Bali Eats: Eating at Rice field experience at Bebek Joni, Ubud

Ubud is a well known area in Bali for the beautiful view of rice fields and of course, the traditional Balinese fried duck. We have tried Bebek Tepi Sawah and Bebek Bengil in our previous trips to Bali before. The setting of the restaurant kinda looks familiar somehow.

Just like at Bebek Tepi Sawah, there is also a statue of Dewi Sri (re: goddess Sri) at Bebek Joni. The Balinese worship Dewi Sri as the goddess of rice and prosperity.

The view of the rice field is breath taking. When I visited Bebek Bengil before, the rice field was just harvested the day before so the sight is not as beautiful as the rice field now at Bebek Joni.

After we had enough fun in the rice field, we walked back to our designated table. Yup, if you are wondering, you will eat your food at one of the huts over there. Pretty cool, right?

Here comes our favorite Balinese deep fried duck. So crispy, so rich in flavor, so good.

We also ordered Balinese fried rice which is served with fried egg, satay and chicken. Don't forget the crackers.

Overall, I enjoyed my lunch here at Bebek Joni. This is one great alternative to the other duck restaurants in Ubud.

Bali Eats: Porky Affair at Babi Guling Ibu Oka, Ubud

Babi Guling (Suckling Pig) is one of the famous culinary of Bali. And everyone seems to rave about Ibu Oka's at Ubud. If you plan to stay in Ubud, you can include a visit to Babi Guling Ibu Oka as part of your culinary activity.

As the restaurant is very busy everyday, it seems that the roasted suckling pig has been pre-cooked so that customers do not have to wait for too long for the portion of roasted suckling pig. The dish is served together with a portion of white rice, clear soup and veggies.

The roasted suckling pig is more on the okay side. It's not bad but it did not blow me away. I'd prefer to have the famous duck over at Bebek Bengil or Bebek Tepi Sawah. Both places are also located in Ubud so you may want to give them a visit if you are visiting Ubud.

Bali Eats: Bebek Bengil, Ubud

Whenever you visit Ubud area in Bali, you should give Bebek Bengil a visit for a food affair.

The diner is set around the rice field, which happened to be harvested the day before. And hence, the muddy view.

Behold the famous crispy duck. The duck is kinda small I admit but it taste very crispy and yummy especially when eaten together with the chili sauce.

Don't miss out the trademark dessert from Bebek Bengil, the Black Russian Pie. The pie is mixed with vodka, kahlua and topped with chocolate. Ultimate yum!

Do take a walk behind the restaurant to enjoy a nice view of the rice paddy field.

Bali Eats: Duck Fest at Bebek Tepi Sawah, Ubud

Some people come for the rice field view. Others come for the Balinese arts. While others come to seek tranquility and peace for their honeymoon or meditation trip. But my family and I, we come to Ubud to....eat ducks. And Bebek Tepi Sawah is one of the restaurants where you can eat yummy duck dish.

Gyahh! What is that thing? Are we not welcomed here? Hehe no worry, it's the Balinese version of scarecrow. After all, rice field is the trademark thing in Ubud.

By dining at Bebek Tepi Sawah, you can experience eating surrounded by rice field. Too bad our timing was not very great, the rice field was just harvested the day before. And hence, the not-so-pretty view. U_U.

Okay, enough about the rice field, we wanted to eat the real food now. But, the chili must come first. Not one, not two, but three type of chili. All can make you turn into Drogon and breath fire. #watchtoomanyGoTagain

And here comes the main star of the restaurant, the duck! The duck is burned to crispy texture and it's just so yummy to eat the duck together with the rice, the veggies and the chili. You are warned about the chili.

Bebek Tepi Sawah is highly recommended if you decide to visit Ubud in Bali. Yum! If you want to compare with the other famous duck restaurant, do check Bebek Bengil, Ubud.
