Pork Katsu for Dinner at Tonkichi, Takashimaya
Tonkichi is a Tonkatsu specialty restaurant chain which is originated from Japan. The restaurant has been around since 1993 and until the recently, I still saw long queue on its door on a Saturday evening. It is currently has five branches in Singapore, whereby three of the branches are located in Orchard Road.
To our surprise, we saw a great deal in Groupon which offers a hire katsu set meal for SGD15 per person. Yum! We know we should not give this chance a miss because a katsu set meal in Tonkichi costs quite a fair bit (exceeding SGD20).
The set comes with a Chawanmushi, which is an egg custard dish served in a tea cup. A chawanmushi usually consists of egg custard tofu, mushrooms and fishcake.
The voucher only allows us to order one kind of Tonkatsu set meal. If you have not known it yet, Tonkatsu is basically referring to the deep fried pork cutlet. Yes it does sound sinful but it tastes so good. Crispy skin, succulent meat which simply melts in your mouth. It tastes even better (and also more sinful) when eaten together with a warm bowl of Japanese rice.
There are two kinds of pork katsu served on our tonkatsu meal. The difference is the type of the meat used. One is leaner than the other. Both taste pretty much similar though.
Tonkichi is definitely one of the best places to eat Tonkatsu in Singapore. I guess we will come back here again (hopefully it comes as an offer in Groupon again one day). LOL. #cheapoeater
