Taiwanese Aboriginal Dance Performance at Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village

I never realise that there are so many ancient tribes in Taiwan. My Chinese teacher told us, the students, that there are twelve aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. The Amis, Atayal, Bunun, Kavalan, Paiwan, Puyuma, Rukai, Saisiyat, Thao, Truku, Tsou and Yami. If I am not wrong, the tribe domiciles at Wulai is the Atayal tribe because they are the famous mountain tribe. If you visit Wulai, you can try dressing up as the Atayal tribe and they will help you to take picture. You will notice that the Atayal tribe has facial tattoo on their face. Those with facial tattoo means they have gone through the coming-of-age rituals. However, you cannot watch the tribal dance performance in Wulai because the area is not big enough to stage a dance performance.

If you would like to watch the Formosan dance performance, you can watch it at Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village in Nantou. There is a daily dance performance held at Naruwan theatre. Thank goodness we managed to make it on time for the performance.

The dance performance is so lively and full of shouting. And all the tribal men looks so strong and ready to go to war (who knows we can see eye candies here). Okay, this part is probably about the war songs. Hahaha.

Second half of the show focuses more on the music performance. I notice that the traditional costume of the Taiwanese tribes looks so interesting. There are so much color play and yet they still look stylish. Okay I should start listening to their song and stop focusing so much on their fashion.

Oh wow, how did that happen??? Bravo! By the way, "Naruwan" here means "Welcome" in the tribal language.

Interesting Attractions at Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village, Nantou

Once you have alighted from the cable car from Sun Moon Lake, you will arrive at a theme park called Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village. The last time I went here, I explored the area which is kinda similar to a Japanese themed park. It's because the whole park is decorated in One Piece style. You can read my adventure with the Straw hat crew here. So today, we are going to the more "cultural" part of Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village. Okay, let's see what kind of interesting attractions at Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village in Nantou.

For a start, I personally found that blowpipe archery is quite interesting. Since I have watched some contestants in a US variety show called the Amazing Race trying to do it, I am eager to try it too. It looks kinda difficult to do in telly though. Let's see how hard it can be.

It was very hard to do! My goodness. To make it more difficult, the target is like so far away. Blowpipe archery is a good sport to practice your lungs power. Really. You need to pay NTD100 per round. You will get 15 arrows and 10 darts respectively for each round.

Once you have done your good share of blowpipe archery, you can do a more relaxing activity like sightseeing. There are a lot of traditional houses which are where the Taiwanese tribes live. These houses are for display only.

Even though it is only for display, visitors can come into the house and take a look of what's inside the house. It is quite realistic. You can move from one tribal area to another tribal area to understand the history of the people, their customs, culture and values.

You can also do some souvenir shopping because there are gift shops in each tribe area.

Taiwan Travel: One Piece Land in Nantou

We were so amazed when we came in to the entrance of Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village because it looks so European. But, when you step your feet in the next section of the park, you will feel like you are transported to the land of Japan.

The culture village seems to embrace the culture of pirates i.e. One Piece. I am starting to wonder if this place should be called One Piece Land instead.

If you do not know about One Piece, it's a very famous Japanese manga series about the journey of Luffy (the one with the straw hat) and his crew to become the Pirate King. The manga was so famous, it has been adapted into an anime and movie. The anime is pretty famous in Taiwan too and everyday it was aired on local TV at 6.30pm (chinese dubbed).

You will see a lot of stamp booth like this one. A lot of Taiwan's tourist attractions have stamp booth. So if you happen to have a hobby of collecting stamp, you will have a lot of stamp to collect in Taiwan.

The stamp looks pretty cool I admit. I do not have a stamp book though, so I stamped my receipt. XD

There are a few rides inside the village, this one looks pretty awesome but you will be wet wherever you sit. We did not bring any clothes so we skipped this ride. Huhuhu.

I don't really see anything that sounds cultural here but since I love One Piece, this place is awesome! Hahaha. If you go deeper into the village, you can watch some cultural performances e.g. dance shows from the Aboriginal Taiwanese.

If you have enough fun here, you can take the One Piece cable car ride to Sun Moon Lake.

Taiwan Travel: Finding Lavender at Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village

During my stay in Taiwan, my friend and I have taken the HSR to Taichung because we want to buy bus ticket to Nantou county to visit both Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village and Sun Moon Lake. After much difficulties in explaining where we want to go, we managed to finally got a ticket in our hands.

There are two places that we want to visit in Nantou county, the first one is the Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village (九族文化村/ Jiǔzú wénhuà cūn) and Sun Moon Lake (日月潭/ Rìyuètán). Both are located pretty near to each other and connected by cable car. In the bus counter at Taichung HSR station, you can buy the bus ticket together with the village entrance ticket + cable car ticket. The whole tickets cost 880NTD per pax.

We did not know which bus to take so we asked the ticket officer to let us know when the right bus is coming. And here comes our bus.

The bus dropped us near the entrance gate to the village. And surprisingly, the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village looks like..One Piece theme park from outside. For a second, we were wondering whether we were in Japan or Taiwan. XD

When we came in, we were even more surprised because it doesn't look like either Japan or Taiwan. The scenery here is more like European country. LOL.

From this Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village, you don't have to take bus to reach Sun Moon Lake. You can simply take a cable car ride to reach Sun Moon Lake. So it may be better to play in this cultural village first before you make your way to Sun Moon Lake.

Taiwan Travel: How to go to Sun Moon Lake by Cable Car?

If you want to go to Sun Moon Lake from the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village, you do not have to take the bus again. You can reach Sun Moon Lake by taking a cable car called Sun Moon Lake Ropeway. Our village ticket is inclusive of the cable car fee so we were riding it even though my friend is...scared of heights. LOL.

Well the cable car ride is pretty high, so my friend was already scared shitless even when the lake is nowhere in sight yet.

After saw enough green trees, we finally caught a glimpse of Sun Moon Lake from above. So beautiful!

My friend shouted in joy when she saw the cable car station in a distance. I suppose this view gave her a comfort of reaching the ground soon. XD

Sun Moon Lake is a big lake so there is no way you can view the lake by walking around it. But, you can catch the Round-the-Lake bus to visit tourist spots around Sun Moon Lake. The bus stop is located in quite a distance from the cable car station. You have to walk around the car park to reach the entry gate for these cars and you will spot the bus sign across the street.

The cable car ride can only be taken from Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village , which is also known as One Piece Theme Park.
