Taiwan Eats: IJY Sheng, a bakery in the neighbourhood

If you are a bread-lover, you will not starve in Taiwan. There are a lot of good bakeries in Taiwan and IJY Sheng is one of them. You will probably bump into the bakery a number of times in Taipei alone as IJY Sheng has a lot of branches in the city.

Other than the good taste, the size of some of the breads that IJY Sheng sells is humongous. Just like the sugary bread which looks like a diameter of a tree. With sugar granules.

IJY Shengsells a various kind of bread too. Some are better eaten cold as it is filled with sweet cream and half coated in chocolate.

Other than bread, IJY Sheng sells pastry too. Flaky, crispy and sweet. =)

There is one IJY Sheng located at Shida Road near Shida Night Market and another one at Gongguan. The branch at Gongguan often gives free cold tea in summer. =P

Taipei Eats: The famous bubble tea at Gongguan, 陳三鼎

I develop a habit in Taiwan, afternoon walk. There was no chance for me to do that before I came to Taiwan because I was always stuck in my cubicle from 9 to 6 everyday. Boohoo! U_U.

So yeah, I definitely enjoy my new habit. And one place that I often go for my afternoon walk is Gongguan.

Although the reason for the location may not be as healthy as the intention of this activity. Yes, alleys in Gongguan are food-heaven. Once you walk through this alley, you will not leave this place empty-handed.

Stall after stall after stall sell different kind of food. *drool*

And that's when I spotted the famous bubble tea in the neighbourhood, 陳三鼎 (Chénsāndǐng) Bubble Tea. There is always a long queue in front of this store. The store uses High Quality Milk and brown sugar for its bubble tea.

The drink consists of fresh milk and tapioca pearls that have been soaked in brown sugar. Where's the tea, you ask? Well, when I think of it, there's actually no tea at all. The tapioca pearls are very chewy (or like the locals always say, QQ). One cup costs 30 NTD. Crazy cheap.

I do enjoy this drink very much BUT...

Do note that if you do not specify the sugar level, the drink will be super sweet. I could not finish the drink whenever I forgot to specify the sugar level. On the safe side, it's better to ask for half sugar (半糖/ Bàn táng). Less risk of having diabetes as well. =P

Do try out the other famous local dishes in Gongguan like the opposite gua bao and the Thailand Fried Chicken (at night only).

Taipei Eats: Brother's Dragon Boneless Chicken Thigh Steak, Gongguan Night Market

At first glance, I did not really know the name of the stall nor do I know exactly what the stall is selling. It kinda looks like a normal Taiwanese fried chicken stall until I see the long queue that is always forming behind the stall. And just what all the foodie guide in Taiwan say, join the queue for food in Taiwan (because that usually means good food ahead).

The stall is called Brother's Dragon Boneless Chicken Thigh Steak (now that's a mouthful but this is the direct translation from 龍哥無骨雞腿排). The writer of tenintaipei.blogspot.sg managed to spot which one is the Brother Dragon. Hahaha.

Brother Dragon only put two kind of fried chicken that he sells. The chicken priced at NTD70 is the "Salad Dressing/ 生菜沙拉醬" (Shēngcài shālā jiàng). The salad here is referring to Japanese mayo which is slightly on the sweeter side. Meanwhile, the chicken priced at NTD80 is the "Vietnamese Sweet and Sour Dressing/ 越式酸辣醬" (Yuè shì suān làjiàng).

I chose to take away the NTD70 which comes with Salad Dressing and a portion of salad too at the side of the chicken. It tastes yummy! If you decided to dine there (they do set up some tables and chairs near the stall), you can have a refill of the salad for free! Awesome, right?

If you are not full by eating the above fried chicken alone, you should also try the famous gua bao which is also located at Gongguan Night Market. I really love Gongguan up to the point I can go to this night market every day during my stay in Taipei.

Taipei Eats: Sushi Shop, Gongguan MRT Station

A lot of (but not all, unfortunately) MRT stations in Taipei have small sushi shops. These small sushi shops usually sell a variety of sushi and you can either buy a pre-packed box or pack your own box.

If you opt to pack your own box, there is a minimum order of 5 pieces. 7 is the maximum number of sushi you can pack inside a box. The price for the sushi varies depend on the type.

The shop also sells a variety of don and soba. But I prefer their sushi because the don is usually kinda cold.

Too bad not every train station have this shop. So far I have noted the above sushi shop in Gongguan and Taipei Main Station.

Taiwan Eats: Cup noodle at convenience store

吃幾碗的泡麵? How many instant noodles bowls have you eaten?

Whenever I am not so concerned about my health (those days exist!), I love eating instant noodles. I don't know what kind of flavouring that the Taiwanese use in their instant noodle package but it works (in terms of taste but no idea about health content).

Best place to eat instant noodle? Convenience store, of course. Like this huge 7-11 that I randomly found around Gongguan. Huge convenience store means more seats inside. Plus wifi. Tee-hee.

Oh, say hi to 7-11's mascot (which I don't know the name).

Today, we are going to try AQ (阿Q) cup noodle. Based on the picture I think the taste should be BBQ pork? =P

3 minutes later. Hmm this one looks kinda plain. And empty.

The garlic taste in the broth is quite strong. It's edible but I would rather eat different flavor.

There's always deal going on about cup noodles. Sometimes, you can get one at 17NTD only. Crazy, eh? Better don't eat this everyday for your health sake. Hahaha.

Taipei Eats: Pizza party at Maryjane Pizza, Gongguan

Staying in Taipei for a few months will make you miss Western food. Thanks goodness, it is not very difficult to find one in Taipei. A friend from Singapore who studied in Taipei at that time introduced us to a cozy pizza place at Gongguan called Maryjane Pizza.

Finding a place to sit during peak hour is not an easy task. But since we came straight after church around 11am on Sunday morning, it was not that bad yet.

The place looks quite cozy right? It's really nice to chat with friends here. Or chill out by yourself.

We ordered a spinach pizza. This is our first time ordering pizza which has a lot of greens.

Taipei Eats: Egyption Dali Kebab, Gongguan

If you are wondering if you read the title right, yes, your eyes are still working properly. You can eat kebab in Taipei. Really.

When I was a student in Taipei, my daily activities involved evening stroll to either Shida Night Market, Gongguan, Ximending or Taipei Main Station. During those strolls to Gongguan, I always spotted this particular stall. Which just located along the pedestrian road (the left side if you are walking from Taipower Building MRT Station).

Ordering is easy cause they only have 2 types: Small one or big one. If you want to add cheese, you need to pay extra 10 dollars. But the cheese will make the kebab taste yummier. =)

Yum. Meat. Hmm, wait, now I started to wonder, what kind of meat is that? I should have asked the ladyboss last time what kind of meat do they use. XD

Taipei Eats: We Love Cookies, Gongguan

After hearing about yummy cookies shop at Gongguan from a friend who was studying at National Taiwan University (NTU), I (like usual) crave for cookies. How to get slim???

Heck, it's not everyday you can eat cookies, so let's just go for it. Hahaha. I know I was close when I smell fresh-from-the-oven cookies. Yum~~~

Dark Chocolate Cookie at We Love Cookies Gongguan Taiwan

You know sometimes you see something good but you are not so sure of whether they will really taste that good (you got what I mean?). This will not be a problem here because you can ask for a sample. Oh my gawd, why is Taipei very cool? I SELDOM see this happening in Singapore or Indonesia. I should just stay in Taipei forever...to eat.

Okay, snapped back from my cookie orgasm.

Other than cookies, the shop also sells cupcake.

I decided to buy red velvet cupcake and three kind of cookies i.e. double chocolate, peanut and chocolate. I really hope the walking distance from my place to this shop can help me burn the calorie from these goodies. Hahahah.
