I love going to Taiwan but unfortunately I could not visit the country every year because well, I love going to other countries too. So basically, if I follow my wanderlust everytime it pops up, I will go broke in a second. Thankfully we are living in the era of social media and I really like checking out latest food trend in Taiwan. The foodie instagrammer from Taiwan is so good at taking picture and even editting them before uploading into Instagram. I am in awe.

If I have the chance to go Taipei now I will surely go to the food that IG-er @tong_intw took at Shilin Night Market. I know Totoro is a very popular character from Hayao Miyazaki’s creation and even though Totoro is born in Japan, its fame has reached the shore of its neighbouring country, Taiwan. But this is the first time I see that someone has created pancake mold in the shape of Totoro and then selling the filled pancake in the shape of Totoro at Shilin Night Market.

Based on @tong_intw’s picture, you can select one flavor for batter and one flavor for filling. The batter selection is: valrhona chocolate, marukyu-koyamaen matcha and lescure cream (oh wow, what’s with the exotic name?). The filling flavor is: cheese, rice cake, custard, red bean, peanut custard, chocolate custard, brown sugar rice cake. You can mix two flavor too although it’s not very clear if there’s additional charge cause my Mandarin sucks. You can see how the pancake is filled with the cream from @yen.food.life’s pictures. Oh gosh, they look so yummy and cute.

Price wise, the varlhona chocoalte batter and lescure cream costs 50NTD while marukyu-koyamaen matcha costs 55 NTD. I suppose it will be something like Singapore Mr Bean’s pancake but in Totoro shape. Smart marketing move because I would also buy Totoro because I can take picture with it before eating them.

Taipei Eats: Cheese Potato at Shilin Night Market

Located just opposite Jiantan MRT Stations and on the way to the Shilin Night Market, there is no way you can miss the cheese potato stall at Shilin (well, unless you visit the night market via Shilin MRT Station I guess).

This stall is basically selling baked potato with a lot of toppings. And later on, after the toppings are added on top of the baked potato, the whole thing will be drenched by melted cheese. Yucks or Yums?

They are not joking when they drench the whole thing with cheese. Voila! The Baked Potato with Corn and Ham swim inside cheese. Hahaha. Despite the look, the taste of this food is superb. SUPERB!

Worry about the calorie? Walking around the night market will burn the calorie and you can eat more stuff after that. Cool, eh? =P

Taipei Eats: Small Sausage Hugged in Big Sausage, Shilin Night Market

Yes, the name of the food is really a mouthful (and weird) to pronounce in English. But it is literally the direct translation of the food's real name in Mandarin, 大腸包小腸 (Dàcháng bāo xiǎocháng). Basically you order a big sausage which will hug the small sausage. You got what I mean? Hahaha. I suppose at this time, a picture serves a thousand words. LOL.

Oh I know, it looks like a hotdog but you replace the outer bun with a bigger sausage. Oh my gawd, I am a genius. #selfdeclare

You can choose a lot of different taste for the sausage e.g. original or black pepper.

The sausage stall is located anywhere in the night market all across Taipei but the one I went to is located at the basement level of Shilin Night Market.

Taiwan Eats: Crispy Fried Chicken, Shilin Night Market

While everybody seems to refer to Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken once we talk about fried chicken (雞排/ Jī pái). But it is not the only nice fried chicken in Taiwan, in fact it is just one of the many. When we visited the underground section of Shilin Night Market, we stumbled into another fried chicken stall which has a long snaking queue. Well, since long queue means yummy food in Taiwan (fyi, not always accurate)....

Turns out this fried chicken is so tender and juicy that they called it "the fried chicken that piss". What a name, eh. The size is not as big as Hot Star's so it would not be too much for small eaters.

Taiwan Eats: Papaya Milk, Shilin Night Market

Papaya, even though it is a fruit, it is not as popular as its fellow fruits like strawberry. I mean, you never hear a song called "Papaya Field Forever" or "Papaya Avalanche" or "Papaya Swings" right? #okaynotfunny

Well if you happen to be a papaya lover, you will rejoice upon the fact that the Taiwanese love to mix papaya and milk. And hence, it's called papaya milk! 木瓜牛奶 (Mùguā niúnǎi)! And to make you even happier, papaya milk can often be found at every night market. Yes, it's that simple.

For instance, there is one at Shilin Night Market. If you walk near the temple inside Shilin Night Market, you will see it soon.

Night Market Food: Scallops on a Stick, Shilin Night Market

Whenever we, the girls, are going to a night market, we are immediately attracted to those stalls with (a) long queue or (b) cute mascot. I suppose in this case, (b) is the culprit. That scallop mascot is like...kawaii! XD

We pass by this stall while we are strolling in Shilin Night Market. They look somewhat interesting (and the mascot is cute) so we decide to stop and order. Haha.

It's like scallops with salt and pepper because they basically just coat it with whatever powder according to the topping that you chose. Hmm okay-ish but not really fantastic I guess. Haha.

Night Market Food: Fried Milk

It is time for another night market food post. Nom nom nom.

Fried Milk is not a new thing I suppose. And every country has its own version of this well-known street food. So how do the locals sell this delicacy? Let's see the one sold at Shilin Night Market.

For a start, the cart and the seller's apron is totally in the theme. =P

These are the pre-fried milk cubes. Looks like milk candy?

You can see from the sign that 1 stick of these food will cost you NTD 20. You can buy 3 sticks for NTD50.

The seller will fry it for few minutes before giving it to you. When the fried milk was given to you, it will look like this. Yes, how on earth does it become round? Hahaha.

It's extremely hot. Be careful and don't burn your tongue. Eat this slowly, okay? Hehe. Taste-wise, it taste a bit sweet but still okay, not too sweet I suppose. This delicacy can be easily found in any night market in Taiwan. I've seen this stall at Shilin and Raohe Night Market. So if you want to be sure, you can just go to either one of these night markets.

Taipei Eats: Penis Hotdog, Shilin Night Market

Yes, you read the title correctly. I did not believe it when I heard about this food for the first time either. But they exist! Interested? Let's dive in Shilin Night Market.

The hotdog stall is located near a temple in the middle of the night market (wait? a temple? This make it sounds very wrong indeed. LOL)

The colourful sign can be easily spotted.

As you can see, the penis come in many colors. One hotdog costs 60NTD. I went with my girl friends to this stall and I admitted we kinda giggled upon this finding. XD

My daring friend opted for the green-coloured penis. We could not stop laughing when she ordered that. Actually you don't have to feel embarassed because this "unique" delicacy is popular with tourists too. And yes, it comes with one size, so if you want to try other food in the night market, I suggest you share the ~~penis~~..uuh, hotdog.

Taipei Eats: Shilin Night Market

It is a must to visit a night market (夜市/Yèshì) when you are at Taiwan. It's a culture. An eating culture, you can say. But since this culture involves yummy food, why don't we embrace it as well? =P

If you ask any person on which night market you would like to visit in Taiwan, they will mention Shilin Night Market. Without fail. After all, everyone will not miss the chance to munch that cripsy chicken cutlet and drink the bubble tea or ai yu jelly or papaya milk. Oh gosh, I haven't posted any pictures yet and I'm already hungry. =P

Welcome to Shilin Night Market! Yes, it's always crowded! Be warned!

Shilin Night Market is divided into the food section (both above and under ground) and fashion section. If you enter from the the entry with the sign (see the above picture), you are at the food section. Probably you can tell from all those smell.

The night market has game stall too. Which are randomly scattered inside with no specific location. XD

This is the basement section of the night market. If you enter the basement around 7ish at night, I can guarantee you that you will not be able to walk without bumping into someone else.

The fashion street at Shilin night market is not less crowded either. You can get bags, clothes and accessories here at the fashion street section. Remember to bargain!

You can get Hello Kitty sneakers here at the night market although they are kinda pricey. Especially when compared to the usual sneaker which you can get at merely 390 NTD.

If you are looking for a gift for your beloved furry friends, you can get it at the night market too. How about cute ties for your dogs? =)

I can say that Shilin Night Market is my favourite night market so far. And it's conveniently located as it's just a step away from the MRT. Please note that the nearest MRT to Shilin Night Market is Jiantan MRT Station (Not Shilin MRT Station, weird, eh?). Now go and fill your growling tummy with lots of food!
