Taipei Eats: Having breakfast at Shida Road

Walking along Shida road everyday makes me passing by this breakfast stall who seems to be manned by a husband and wife couple. Every morning the wife is always ready behind the frying station while the hubby is ready to make your coffee or tea order.

Their full menu. They sell egg crepes, sandwiches, burger and pasta. The prices are really student-friendly.

If you are not sure about the menu, you can refer to the picture menu instead.

They also have seasonal item occasionally. Like this fried chicken burger.

And a bottle of chilled soya milk.

The stall is open only shortly after 1pm. What a good business eh? But they open everyday though unless they are on holiday or there's typhoon in town. =P

Taipei Eats: Saladay, Taipei 101

You will seldom hear people want to eat salad when they visit Taipei. But after months of eating a lot of fried stuff and yummy meat, I kinda crave for salad. And lazy to make one myself. Then I stumbled upon Saladay.

Saladay sells salad box which is perfect for lazy people like me (who don't even use plates at home).

It may not be healthy but it was sure the healthiest food I ate during my stay in Taipei. LOL.

Taiwan Eats: IJY Sheng Bakery, Taipei

On the way from my house (near Taipower Building Power MRT Station) to Shida (NTNU), there is this bakery called IJY Sheng. You will not miss it because their display is big and their signage is bright purple. Since I walk pass it everyday, obviously that is where I often buy my bread from.

How good are IJY Sheng's breads? Well, we will find out bread by bread. XD

1. Pizza bread

Not bad especially when you feel like eating pizza without the need to buy 1 whole pan. Hahaha.

2. Ham and Cheese Toast Sandwich

I found this kind of bread sold in Singapore too. The taste is pretty similar but I suppose the price tag in Taipei is cheaper than Singapore.

I still have quite a number of bread pictures so I guess I will post them in different posts. I am such a bread-lover. #nowonderfat

Taiwan Food: Roast beef and egg roll

Everytime I have dinner with my uncle and aunt who are staying in Taipei, they will make sure I will not go to bed starving. In other words, they will force-feed me until I can make my back to my rented apartment..rolling.

Before I roll back home, they will still give me something to bring back. More food! My uncle said to open it at home. Hmm, I wonder what is this...

I was full but...I opened it anyway the moment I reached home. Voila!! Hello, 牛肉蛋餅 (Niúròu dàn bǐng)!

Oh, why were there only 3 pieces left? I ate one obviously. LOL. This one is not bad, seems like a Taiwanese version of wrap. Hahaha.

You can buy this food at any breakfast stall in Taiwan. Seems to be one of the more popular item among the local.

Taipei Eats: Perfect match of Taiwan breakfast, Dou Jiang You Tiao

You will never run out of breakfast option when you are staying in Taipei. And if you don't know what to order just say the four magic words: 豆漿油條 (Dòujiāng yóutiáo).

豆漿 is known as soya milk in English. And in Taiwan, the breakfast stall usually serves it in bowl (some in cup too) especially if you opt for dine in. How to drink this? Just bring the bowl near to your mouth and start slurping. Slurpppp~~~

油條 is called fritters in English (this, I am not so sure but I got this word from Google Translate). This deeply fried stuff is amazing. I am so willing to close eyes on the amount of oils used to enjoy this food *unhealthy alert*. And look at the size!!!! Satisfied!

Happiness guaranteed. Hehehe.

If you think I am exaggerating, even JJ Lin, a famous singer, says so in this song titled 豆漿油條. How's that! Hahaha.

This kind of breakfast can be find in any breakfast stall in Taiwan. Just pop by and ask for them. =)

Taiwan Eats: A typical breakfast in Taiwan

I love eating breakfast in Taiwan. Most of my breakfast in Singapore nowadays consist only bread. But for nearly same price, you can get a breakfast combo in Taiwan consist of...

1. A glass of milk tea

A choice of either..

2. Fried egg and sausages

or..

3. Spaghetti

Btw, do you know the Chinese name of Spaghetti Bolognaise? It's actually quite easy to memorise, 肉醬義大利面 (ròu jiàng Yìdà lì miàn). 肉醬 is literally translated to meat sauce. And I kinda like the Taiwanese version of Bolognaise. It has the homey feeling in a Taiwanese way. I suppose it's because we didn't eat this at some kind of a luxury restaurant. We had these meals at hole-in-the-wall kind of breakfast place. Which makes it kinda home-ish? Hehehe.

The combination of milk tea + fried egg/ sausages costs around 50-55 NTD while the combination of milk tea + spaghetti costs around 70NTD. Cheap eh? =)

Let's eat mangoes!

I love mango season in Taiwan (which is usually in summer). Why? Because Taiwanese mangoes are really delicious. 非常好吃!! (Fēicháng hào chī!)

Another thing, don't they look bigger than usual mangoes?

If you don't feel like cutting the fruit itself, good news for you, you can find a lot of mangoes product all over Taiwan. Like mango ice cream for a start (which I bought from 7-11 so it's not expensive at all).

Or mango tart? I did not see this item when I came to Taiwan in winter so I think this item must be seasonal! Go get one from IJ Ysheng Bread Store (which are located all across Taipei, you will recognize it's purple signage).

And the yummiest of all especially when eaten on a hot summer day is of course, the ice mango (芒果冰/ mángguǒ bīng). This one I ate at Ximending.

If you happen to be visiting Taiwan in summer, go eat the mangoes! Nom nom nom! =)

Taiwan's Family Mart Food Review

Did I tell you that I am a fan of Taiwan's convenience stores? I think I can even call myself a convenience-store-junkie although I believe this title belongs to the majority of the Taiwanese. LOL.

I mentioned about the awesome-ness of Taiwan's 7-11 here. But now, I'm gonna introduce you to another convenience store called Family Mart (全家/ Quánjiā). Well I guess, if you've been to Taiwan before, you'd have definitely seen this store. Just like 7-11, they are everywhere, at every corner of Taiwan. Haha.

Why I suddenly bring up Family Mart? It's because it was recently taken over by little cute managers. =)

Other than the cutie managers, Family Mart do sell decent and yummy food. My favourite is the microwave-able fried rice (I did not say healthy). I think Fami is the name of the brand.

You can ask the staff (not the little managers, the real staff) to heat the food for you. Once it's heated, this is how the fried rice looks like. Really not bad and it tastes good! ^^

I would not say the same about Family Mart's sandwich or 7-11's too, for that matter. If you want sandwich, it's way better to buy it from the breakfast stall rather than convenience stores.

I prefer 7-11 to Family Mart but I love it to come there whenever I'm bored with the selection at 7-11. Hahaha looks like I'm spoilt for choice in Taiwan. =P

And hence I tried to hold back from eating at restaurants. And stick to my beloved 7-11. XD

If you are broke too, welcome to the world of 便利商店 (Biànlì shāngdiàn/ convenience store). Fyi, 7-11 near Wanlong MRT Station have a big eating space downstair. =P

Cup noodle is definitely my comfort food in times of no-money. And the cup noodles sold in Taiwan taste awesome. Don't ask me about the healthy contents in this cup noodle though.

This snack taste a bit spicy but nice. Crunch crunch.

To balance the diet, I bought strawberry yakult (多多/ duōduō).

What's your favourite convenience store food? I wonder if 7-11 in Japan sells the same thing.

If you are bored of eating 7-11 food, you can try different varieties from other convenience stores like Family Mart or Hi-Life. =)

Cutie baby panda, Yuan Zai

When the news about the birth of the baby panda first heard back in April 2013, the whole nation of Taiwan cheered. If you need further proof, the news (and the follow-up news) made a headline everytime I turn on my TV. Haha.

I did not really think the baby panda is cute (it's pinkish) but now, that Yuan Zai (圓仔) has grown up. He's really cute!!!

Yup, I'm gonna spam you with the cutie panda now.

Awwww he's really really cute. Looking at his pictures really makes me smile. =)

What to do in Ximending?

Ximending is like...an awesome place to be if you want to be surrounded by the youngsters. And of course, it's very happening even on a weekday nights. =P

If you want to go to Ximending by taking the metro. You can go to Ximen Station and go to exit 6. Once you come out from below, you will be welcomed by this sight.

Ximending has a lot of restaurants and cafes. You don't have to worry of not being able to find anything to your liking. Worst case scenarios, fast food restaurants like McD and KFC are here as well.

What is the best food in Ximending? If you are asking me, I can't help but pointing you to Ah Chung Mian Xian.

It offers the best mee sua in town. And it's so damn cheap. 45NTD for a small bowl. When you talk about portion in Taiwan, nothing is small. The small bowl can stuff my stomach happily.

Other than eating yummy mee sua, Ximending is well-known as a venue for the youngsters to..sing to their heart content. Looking at the size of the Partyworld KTV in Ximending, I believe singing is a passion deeply embedded in most of Taiwanese's hearts. LOL. (p.s. my Mandarin teachers are not really into singing though. Too bad.)

If you are looking for a shopping mall in Ximending, you can go to Eslite Amba. Amba also serves as a hotel. And they are quite conveniently located in Ximending. Although I have to say, you can find cheaper accommodation in Ximending as Amba can be considered quite expensive. To find other type of accommodation, you can click here .

There are so many things you can do in Ximending, I could not write them all in one posts. No worry, I will post whatever activities I have seen or done in Ximending in the future. 我愛西門丁！=)

Taipei Eats: A random Japanese restaurant, Gongguan

When you are staying in Taipei, everyday is an adventure to...look for a good food. Unless you are not a glutton like me, I suppose. Tonight, my classmate and I decided to venture one stop away from Taipower Building Station, Gongguan.

If you don't know it yet, there are a lot of restaurants and food stalls in Gongguan, both on the main streets and on the alleys behind the main streets. This is how the alley looks like. Food on the right, food on the left. Plus motorbikes.

We were so hungry after class, so we just followed our intuition and...our "eyesight". And we were tempted by the display of this Japanese restaurant.

The name of the restaurant. I'm really sorry but I can only read the last two characters - 拉麵/ Lāmiàn i.e. Japanese Ramen. XD

As what the name said, the restaurant serves a variety of ramen. They also have the rice set too.

Which is good for me, cause I was having a craving for an omurice.

My friend ordered Chicken Karage Set. We were so not into ramen that night. Maybe we love eating rice so much. Hahaha.

Each rice set costs around NTD 120 - 150. And they taste pretty decent although not that special. The restaurant is located on the alley near "Two Peck".

We are so gonna get fat in Taiwan.
