7D Korea Golden Rama Tour: Seongeup Folk Village, Jeju Part 1

A trip to South Korea will not be completed without a taste of its rich cultural history. The best way to learn and experience traditional Korean history is by visiting folk villages. South Korea has so many folk villages across its major cities and this includes Jeju. Golden Rama Tour has included Seongeup Folk Village as part of its itinerary for Jeju and here we are, at the foot of Mt Halla, ready to learn and absorb the interesting Korean culture. Woots.

A bit of commotion happened right at the entrance of the folk village. The commotion is totally not related to the folk village at all but rather to our bus driver in Jeju. Some of the ahjummas in our tour group were apparently having crush on the bus driver and this is their only chance to take picture with him because he's gonna change shift with another bus driver due to family reason. Jenny and Nico, our tour guides, asked the bus driver to come down from the bus for a while so that the ahjumma fans could take picture with him. It's so funny to see them acting so shy toward the bus driver ahjussi. Kekeke.

Okay back to...ahem, rich cultural history of South Korea. Due to the commotion earlier, I think many of us missed out the interesting fishing boat which I think is similar to the one used for shooting of Legend of the Blue Sea. Lee Min Ho's character used this kind of fishing boat quite a lot of time when the scenes moving back to his historical self.

Moving on right along, we saw even a more traditional way of floating on the water, wooden raft. The scenery behind the raft is pretty nice to look at. I suppose there are a lot of greeneries in the island of Jeju since after all, it's a volcanic island and volcanic soil is known to be good for plantation.

Aww another round of beautiful hydrangea. I did not see hydrangea in this color earlier at Camellia Hill. It's always nice to see pretty flowers because the only way to see them in Singapore is by paying admission fee to Garden by the Bay's Flower Dome. Sadz. Well, admission fee is also applicable for most of the attractions with flowers in South Korea too, actually. Aigoo. Money is very important after all.

Jenny has stopped us when we were stumbling into Jeju traditional house. The traditional house in Jeju is kinda different from the ones in Seoul. I suppose it is because of different terrain and weather condition that the island is experiencing from the main island of South Korea. The walls of the house are made from volcanic stone whereby the roof is made from rugs.

Corns hanged outside the house. I wonder if that's where the people used to hang their wet clothes as well. Oh right, I just found out while browsing randomly that you can actually rent an accommodation in Jeju traditional house style at Airbnb. No kidding. Reviews said that the place is clean and equipped with modern facility such as cable TV, wifi and even karaoke set. Price-wise, it's approximately 171 SGD per night but since the house is rather big, you can share amongst 7 people. That will be somewhat a rather unique experience right?

Hmm, obviously, the type of house that the owner is offering at Airbnb will not be something similar to the one that we are looking at at the moment. This house seems to be more suitable for animals instead of human. Hahaha. Oh wait, maybe they are for animals indeed because the tools hanged on the wall seems related to animal-management-and-caring-stuff.

Aww how come the scarecrows here do not look scary at all? In fact, they look rather cute. Although probably they will turn into something sinister once the sun has set. Aigoo, scary.

We were kinda curious on the tools hanging above the fire hydrant and it turns out to be trap for wild animals. Hmm curious and yet not so curious in learning how the tools are used back in those days. Maybe that's why I am not an archeologist or historical. The level of curiousity is not deep enough to encourage further investigation or learning.

We were currently only halfway of our exploration in Seongeup Folk Village. So as usual, I will continue in the next post okay? Anyeong!
