Singapore Eats: Maki-san, The Cathay

It was such a hellish week in the office so I'm glad that it is finally weekend. Woots! Obviously I did not dare to make any dinner appointment tonight fully knowing that there is a great threat from sudden surprises to the reporting deadline which is due on Monday. Sure enough, it happens again. Bummer.

When I finally able to enjoy my Friday night, I was so tired up to the point I did not even bother to check who's free amongst my friends. I decided to just date myself on a Friday night. But, I am quite sure a lot of restaurants will be fully packed and I don't want to attract attention from the non-solo diners while I am enjoying my meal in the comfort of my own company. In times like this, I would proceed to one of the places in my list which are solo diners friendly. For today, let's make our way to Maki-san, the funky sushi stall located at the basement of the Cathay.

Customers at Maki-san are allowed to create their own sushi roll and salad. There is an ordering form whereby customers can pick the layer of the sushi (i.e. egg roll or seaweed), the type of rice for the sushi (i.e. white or brown rice) and the ingredients to fill your sushi of course (some items like crispy enoki mushroom and tempura may take longer to fry). Customers can also choose their own sauce to put inside the sushi. My creation tonight is the egg roll brown rice filled with enoki mushroom tempura, asparagus and chili crab sauce. Funky enough for a humble Friday night, no?

Singapore Eats: Sushi Tei, Vivo City

I am so happy my bae is finally back in Singapore after spending 5 days 4 nights holiday in Bali. Thanks to the technology (i.e. internet connection), we are still chatting using LINE as if we are in Singapore. She even bought me some Balinese snacks. Yum. No wonder we are best friends. Hahaha.

To celebrate her return (and the weekend of course), we had our usual Saturdate eating Japanese cuisine at Sushi Tei. Needless to say, Sushi Tei's outlet could be find practically anywhere in Singapore and it is famous for its long line. But it's okay, we have enough Magikarp and Rattata to catch anyway (Why can't I find Pikachu?). After we got our table, we immediately made our order and pick our favourite sushi from the sushi train, the salmon aburi sushi. I have never found better sushi than this which involved salmon aburi (okay, I am more of a fan of modern sushi which utilise the use of sauce instead of the original sushi from Japan which only use rice and raw fish). The crunchy bits are really nice too.

Both of us are missing the Japanese curry rice so much. Japanese curry is pretty different from Indian and Indonesian curry. It has a hint of sweetness and yet, pretty thick. If you want to recreate some Japanese curry, I guess it's easy to use curry blocks from the supermarket although I really don't know which brand is nice. Chicken katsu curry from Sushi Tei tastes heavenly especially since they use Japanese rice. My ultimate weakness I have to say.

We ate the snack that my bae brought from Bali as dessert. It looks pretty similar to those dessert which I usually find in wet market in Jakarta. Texture wise, very chewy with a lot of coconut and cheese on it. This kinda makes me miss home. :(

Rollie Olie, Star Vista

One of the challenges to meet up with friends who do not work near your current office anymore is to find the middle ground, a perfect meet-up place which is not too far from everybody's home. When you are trying to find a mid-point from people who lives in Jurong, Redhill and Bishan, the choice fell upon Buona Vista. Thankfully, with the latest addition of Star Vista, we have more food choices to consider from. We decided to try an Asian fusion restaurant named Rollie Olie.

Rolie Olie serves fusion creation of sushi roll and salad with a touch of Californian style. Since it is a fusion restaurant, the chefs here are pretty creative and have the flair of combining a various ingredients. The above sushi roll is named Caterpillar (probably because it looks greenish) and it was our best pick for that night. Caterpillar consists of crab meat, cucumber, jcama (not sure what is this), red roe and avocado on top. The one pictured below is named Sunkissed Salmon. We only realised that Sunkissed Salmon is actually Caterpillar + Salmon after we have tasted both.

The sushi roll in the middle has the weirdest combination in our opinion. It is named Beachcomber and supposedly it consists of fried soft shell crab, prawn salad, avocado, cucumber and the mysterious jcama. However, it turns out that there is a touch of cheese and strawberry on top of the sushi roll, which taste kinda weird. Not that it's entirely bad, but I don't think strawberry goes well with sushi. It's probably just my tastebud thing, though.

The sushi roll's price ranges from S$12.95 to S$16.95. The restaurant is not big but it is sure cozy for a small group of diners to enjoy sushi while chatting the night away.

Singapore Eats: A semi DIY Sushi Roll at Maki San, The Cathay

If you feel that you want to decide what goes into your sushi roll by yourself but don't have the skill/ kitchen to do so, you can do it at Maki San. The sushi joint allows you to choice the filling of the sushi by filling the sushi order form. Once you are done filling your order, you just need to pass it to the staff and he/she will create your sushi roll.

The sushi roll is provided in a very nice box. Takeaway is definitely will not be an issue here. They have unique option too such as a brown rice sushi roll. Healthier kind of sushi right? Hehe.

Maki San also offers salad but I prefer their sushi roll. If you are in a rush to go to watch movie, you can also order this for a takeaway as the packaging is nice and simple. Although you will probably have difficulty using the soy sauce in the dark movie theater.

Maki San is located at the basement level of The Cathay. One level down from the Assembly Ground, a cafe which we managed to try out earlier.

Taipei Eats: Sushi Shop, Gongguan MRT Station

A lot of (but not all, unfortunately) MRT stations in Taipei have small sushi shops. These small sushi shops usually sell a variety of sushi and you can either buy a pre-packed box or pack your own box.

If you opt to pack your own box, there is a minimum order of 5 pieces. 7 is the maximum number of sushi you can pack inside a box. The price for the sushi varies depend on the type.

The shop also sells a variety of don and soba. But I prefer their sushi because the don is usually kinda cold.

Too bad not every train station have this shop. So far I have noted the above sushi shop in Gongguan and Taipei Main Station.

Singapore Eats: Aussie Roll, Chevron House

Rice roll is like the best thing to have when you are in a hurry. And it's not difficult to make one since you basically just need to roll the rice together with the ingredients and the seaweed. I guess that's the reason why Aussie Roll's business is thriving right at the basement level of Chevron House.

Aussie Roll offers so many type of rice rolls. It caters for both non-vegetarian and vegetarian customers.

On my first try, I bought salmon avocado roll and tuna avocado roll. Both are yummy! =)

On my second try, I realised that Aussie Roll has 3 for 2 promotion every night which starts after 6pm. This round I tried the salmon cream cheese, chili calamari and fried ebi roll. All the rice rolls are nice.

One roll costs around S$2.6 to S$2.80 depends on the filling. They have several tables and seats so customers can opt for dine in if they prefer to.

Jakarta Eats: Sushi Groove, Mal Taman Anggrek

Keep calm and sushi on. Although it's hard to keep calm when you happen to be at your hometown because you can't wait to munch on all the food available in that town. Since I live in the West side of Jakarta, Mal Taman Anggrek has kinda become a weekly affair since my school days (okay, since it's built I suppose). Today, we are going to go to level 4 and make our way to...Sushi Groove.

Fire Island Roll, which is described as spicy unagi roll topped with torched beef. Yup, that's beef on top of the sushi.

Mum is not a sushi eater, so she sticks to her favourite Japanese curry. Katsu curry don again for the mum.

Overall, the food is not bad but I prefer Sushi Tei over Sushi Groove. But there's no Sushi Tei in Mal Taman Anggrek so yeah...

Jakarta Eats: Poke Sushi, Crowne Plaza Hotel

After XX-th attempt by my friend to bring me to Poke Sushi, I finally went there but not with him. I went with my family instead because my mum bought a voucher from Groupon. Hahaha.

The voucher entitled us to for a certain set with sushi combination. It comes with the salmon sashimi. My mum does not eat this so more for me, yeah!

We ordered ala carte item from the menu which is outside the voucher's scope. This roll is called Mini Dynamite Roll. And if a dynamite taste this good, I don't mind exploding. #eh

Poke Sushi has expanded in recent years. Now Poke Sushi can be found in shopping mall too like Grand Indonesia or Summarecon Mall Serpong (if you don't stay in Jakarta).

Jakarta Eats: Kiyadon Sushi, Central Park Mall

Just like in Singapore and Taiwan, Japanese food are popular amongst Indonesian too. For instance, shopping malls in Jakarta mostly have Japanese restaurant in it. Since we have tried Sushi Tei last time (see post), now we are going to try the other popular Japanese restaurant chain, Kiyadon Sushi.

The sushi here comes in a boat. And the conveyer belt really have water to make it looks like river. Creative or too much? =P

Some Indonesians don't really appreciate raw stuff (including me, I can only enjoy raw salmon), so I really appreciate the art of cooked-sushi here. And yes, they put a lot of sauce on the sushi. Fattening sushi, this one. XD

And since my mum does not really eat sushi, we shared a bowl of beef curry don. Not bad in terms of taste.

If you would like to try eating at Kiyadon Sushi, you can visit their restaurant at major shopping malls in Jakarta e.g. Central Park Mall, Mal Taman Anggrek or Senayan City.

Taipei Eats: 7-11's Sushi Roll

7-11 has a very important existence in Taiwanese' daily life. And I really understand this because after stepping my feet on Taiwan, I don't know why but I always visits 7-11 on daily basis. LOL.

Especially if I am pressed for time or can't decide of what to eat, or lazy to walk further just to buy meal, I will just pop by 7-11 and grab whatever deal they have.

One the yummy deal is usually their sushi roll!

There are two types of roll inside one package. The blue package contains kani roll sushi and tamago roll sushi.

There other package (orange if I'm not wrong), contains floss roll sushi. Hahaha only Taiwanese put floss inside their sushi. I kinda like it though. =P

Jakarta Eats: Sushi Tei, Central Park Mall

Chinese New Year holiday means long weekend and it means a peace treaty between tummy and calories. And there is no complete eating trip to Jakarta without popping by Sushi Tei, my favourite Japanese restaurant chain in Jakarta. =)

Let's start with a healthy bowl of Chef's Salad. Okay, not very sure on the healthy part but this best consumed drenched in sauce. XD

Next is a Tendon. While I like anything fried, the rice is just too much. Rice best shared amongst two persons if you are not a big carbo-eater.

No visit to Sushi Tei is completed without trying out its sushi. I craved for unagi so I opted for a simple unagi sushi. Yum!

Great news if your birthday happens to just passed or just around the corner. The waiter/waitress will usually ask if there's any of the customer having a birthday or just had a birthday (a week before or after the actual birthday). Upon production of ID card, they will serve you a birthday sushi roll. Yeah! Happy Birthday Me! (my real birthday is a few days in the future though).

Taipei Eats: Sushi Express, Gongguan

I'm back in Taipei and suddenly have a craving for.....sushi. I know! This is so weird. I should have had a craving for crispy chicken or maybe smelly tofu. Okay..not smelly tofu. =P

To accommodate my craving, my classmates and I went together to the budget-friendly sushi franchise -> Sushi Express. =)

We went to the one located at Gongguan, just opposite National Taiwan University (NTU). Each plate costs 30NTD. Cheap cheap cheap!

The waiter/ waitress will ask you question of whether you'd like to have green tea and miso soup when assign you the seats. We did not know the Mandarin words for miso soup so we just said "bu yao". Now we know that miso soup is called 味噌湯/ wei4zeng1tang1 in Mandarin. So if you'd like to have one, simply say "yao yao". =P
